INDIA: We Built Roads Inside Jungles, So Now Tigers Face New Threats - Crossing Busy Highways

A video of an adult tiger crossing the four-lane National Highway 7 along Pench Tiger Reserve that lies between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, in broad daylight, has triggered a debate on the rampant development and wildlife conservation.

The video that went viral on social media platforms, shows the tiger jumping over the crash barrier to cross over to the other side. And it has once again exposed the inadequate wildlife mitigation measures by National Highways Authority of India.

The video was reportedly shot near Chorbahuli crossing along the highway near Nagpur.

The video recorded by commuters on the highway quickly went viral online and people started having serious discussions about the measures taken by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the region.

After the proposal for four-lane of NH7 between Seoni (Madhya Pradesh) and Nagpur (Maharashtra) in 2008, faced scrutiny, the NHAI told the Supreme Court panel that it was ready to build a 9.3-km flyover over Pench tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh so that wildlife movements are not disturbed.

Incidents of wild animals invading urban spaces are growing rapidly. We have accused them of invading our homes, but haven't we invaded and plundered theirs?

Recently, another news of poisoning of three tigers in Maharashtra broke a lot of hearts. Reports confirmed that a tigress and its two cubs were found dead in Brahmapuri division of Maharashtra, in what is believed to be a case of poisoning.
