It shatters my heart every time I look at my infant covered in tubes and with an oxygen mask; the thought of never being able to hold him in my arms and losing our first child has consumed my life. My son, who is not even a month old, was born with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) and Meningitis attached with multiple other conditions. RDS is a breathing disorder caused due to immature lungs in the infants, and meningitis is the inflammation of brain and spinal cord membranes. The bills for procedures and treatments to be carried out go up to Rs. 10 lakh ($ 13,756), leaving me in complete state of despondence.
I am Shaik Azeemuddin, the father of the child. I am a driver with a monthly income of Rs. 13,000 ($ 179). There wasn’t even a day’s break for my son; he was born on 5th of September this year, and soon after his birth he was put under special care. We didn’t even get a chance to take our baby home or name him. The news of our son’s condition was a huge shock, and I feel powerless when I realise that there is nothing I can do from my end to alleviate his condition. When he cries I cannot carry him in my arms to pacify him. We cannot to see him go through this anymore. He is currently admitted in Ankura hospital and needs urgent medical attention.
With the money I earn, I can barely manage to run a household of four people. It is impossible for me to arrange for the funds needed to pay the medical bills. For all the tests that have been carried out until now, I have borrowed heavily from my friends and relatives and have also sold our gold.
