Washington: The United States has said that it will give a ‘proportional response’ to hacking by Russia in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

“We obviously will ensure that our response is proportional. It is unlikely that our response would be announced in advance,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters here on Tuesday.
Earnest also boasted about US capabilities to launch cyber offensives against other countries.
"The president has talked before about the significant capabilities that the US government has to both defend our systems in the United States but also carry out offensive operations in other countries," he said.
Russian authorities have time and again denied Moscow has been behind breaches, targeting the November 8 election process.
President Vladimir Putin said that his country is not involved in an effort to influence the US presidential election.
“Nothing in the hacking scandal is in Russia’s interests,” he said and accused all sides in the US presidential campaign of misusing rhetoric about Moscow for their own purposes.
Putin said his government will work with whoever won the US election, if the new US leader wishes to work with Russia.
Last week, the US government had formally accused Russia of launching a hacking campaign to interfere with the US vote.
Based on the statement, the country’s spy organizations have said that they are “confident that the Russian government directed the recent compromises of emails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations."
